"Building to Survive"

Survival and all aspects of protection:  from the elements, from wild animanls and from other humans was the primary focus as man began to build his habiation.  As daily life and cultures changed, so did his dwelling.  Man began to utilize new materials and design features as his initial concept of survival changed with a developing world and his own changing needs. Survival would eventually give way to design, convenience and comfort.

Man's abiltiy to utilize the materials around him as he continued to develope new tools and processes were the key to building expansion and the rise of civilization.   This quickly gave rise to architecture and an expression of artistry through building.  Man's dwelling soon began to evolve and fit his specific needs and comfort, as well as continuing to be a place of survival from the elements and from man's historical desire for conquest.

This section could be called the "Rise of the Skyscaper" for it was indeed a parallel development to some of the continued growth of large urban areas.  The development of steel and how it was used pushed the envelope of building at that time and continues to affect the modern architecture of today.

.

Originating in 12th-century France and lasting into the 16th century, there emerged a building and architectural style that is particularly worth noting called Gothic architecture.

Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings.  We will take a closer look at the great cathedrals that were built to glorify God.
