Building Parts Review

This page will be used to highlight general knowledge that we have touched on as we continue our scaled model house.  This page will be referenced as a place to find specific info during the week and will often act as a "review" reference page.   Check your calendar to be sure you have not overlooked it.

The "parts" of a typical wall and the terminology that makes up the framing component of residential building will be found here.  Click on the picture and you will have terminology lists as well as pictures to take notes from.

The history of home building gave rise to many different styles of homes.  These styles were directly influenced by many factors such as weather, ethnic origin, location, etc.

These styles became indigenous in certain regions of our country.  In fact, even now you can venture to different areas of our state and experience completely different types of homes from another region.  Click on the Victorian picture to access the visual presentation.

This building concept can be best summarized by the picture above.  "Shear walling" a structure gives it horizontal movement strength that counteracts seismic shifts caused by earthquakes.  This construction process greatly increases the overall unifed strength of a building especially when they are more than one story.

This article is a "short and sweet" overview of the residential building process.  I find these articles helpful to anyone new to this endeavor so that they will have an immediate mental picture of the kind of ongoing collaboration that takes between the skilled trades as a house is being constructed.
