Intro to Floor Plans'm a title

The floor plan is the most essential graphic element to framing a house.  This part to a set of plans is the "cutaway" view of a house---as if you have "cut" through the house----lifted off that section----and now you are looking down at the "plates" which are the same as seeing where the walls are and how they intersect to define the room designs.  One of the most important part of this graphic is the door and window locations.

The floor plan is such an important element to the design / building phase of a construction project, we will try to understand it from every angle.  This is another presentation of some of the early considerations when designing the floor plans of a building project.

All the graphic elements found on a floor plan must be interpreted.  They must be understood with respect to how they all go together to create the various designs and functions of the building.  The more you become familiar with these symbols, words, and graphic expressions, the more you can visualize the project as it progresses.

The architect begins to look at dimensions and guidelines that are common to his trade when developing the project drawings.  Building codes and common sizes of particular rooms dictate his designs as he develops the floor plan while keeping in mind the design desires of the home owner.

Floor Plans

In architecture, building, and engineering, a Floor plan is a drawing to scale showing a view perspective from above a construction project.

This is a snap shot of a house that has the roof removed.  This view shows the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features at one level of the structure.

Dimensions are usually drawn between the walls to specify room sizes and wall lengths. Floor plans may also include details of fixtures like sinks, water heaters, furnaces, etc. Floor plans may include notes for construction to specify finishes, construction methods, or symbols for electrical items.

The Floor Plan is a measured plane typically projected at the floor height of 4', and, as stated, is the view from above looking down.   The Floor plan is typically where the builder will begin.  The Floor Plan is looked at as the most important graphic component of a set of plan drawings.   Below are four different sets of information concerning floor plans.  Assignments for each is given by the teacher.
