Floor Questions

As we continue to experience the processes that make up a building project, especially in residential building, we soon learn that the actual frame structure or "skeleton" as it were, is an important phase to understand. There is the floor structure part of the frame, as well as the walls and roof.  Each phase has its own unique elements.  We will begin to explore some of those phases on this page.

Once the foundation walls are poured, then the floor structure is constructed.  The success of this stage of construction is dependent on the accuracy of the concrete foundation walls.  This floor structure design is becoming less common in one story residential homes but is the same method used for second stories; which is very common.  Click on the picture for the article and the button to access the questions.

The structure or framework of a building, really begins with understanding how a typical wall is put together.  It is similar to understanding the skeleton of the human body.  From this framework, the rest of the house or building sits and functions.  Here are some introductory images of the framed wall structure of a typical house.  Click on the picture for the info and the button for the assessment.  Enjoy!

When beginning to frame a second story addition, there are structural, code and design considerations that must be considered.  Access this information by clicking on the picture

Wall openings represented by doors and windows are essential design features of a typical house.  Recognizing how they are depicted on the plate material during the framing stage is very important.  Click on the picture and access a "plate reading" assignment.
