I often ask the question, what is the most important tool in the wood shop and in construction.  The answer is often, "you're brain", "eye protection", "a hammer" etc. . .however, without the ability to measure correctly, you're capacity to learn the various processes and tools that do them is very limited.

Measuring correctly, then, is the essential element to building anything.  Think about it!  What house, bridge, building, or any structure could be built without the use of determining the various dimensions accurately and then applying them to the vast array of building processes.

Measuring, then, is a foundational learning segment of the class.  This knowledge is successfully learned as you apply the repetitive concepts of any "math" problem.

Practice makes perfect!

The "measuring" buttons below are power point tutorials that take you through the initial idea of the "customary" measuring system (which is what we still use in the United States) through the concepts of fractions of an inch broken down to "sixteenths".  Follow along carefully and make sure you do the "pretests" and then self check to see if you fully understand.

Too often I have found that at the conclusion of the class, approximately, ten percent of my students really did not fully understand how to measure and convert and use fractions when doing so.  These concepts are fairly easy, but if you struggle with them you simply need to do the problems.  There is no magic to it, just do the problems----you will learn. Each power point below has a "post test".  Be sure and turn them into the teacher before you begin the measuring assignments!

The actual assignments are found by clicking on the "assignment" button to the left.  There are various ones there and you need to do them progressively as you successfully learn. Good luck!  Please ask questions when you need additional help from the instructor.
