Intro to Elevation Plans

Elevations are a two dimensional "unfolding" of a three dimensional object.  To understand this concept, I have included this short presentation to help you visualize this process.

This presentation will give you more information as an introduction of house elevations.  It is to be noted as you develop a sense of how a set of plans works "together"---that you view the elevations and floor plans as a linked graphic expression of the building project.

Sometimes designs are just simply not thought thru very much.  They are those "cookie" cutter houses that, often for the sake of making money, have design asthetics that just do not look good---or functionally it just doesn't work.  This presentation has both with a good overview of all we have looked at with elevations.

This textbook chapter will give you all the information you need to grasp the "elevation" drawing concept in the building process.  As an integral part of the "plan set" or "set of plans", they are the best "view" of how the finished building will appear as you "stand" outside the building and look directly at it from different directions created by different elevation views.

Elevation Details
Construction Elevations

Elevations:  An “elevation” is a drawing that shows the front or side of something.  A floor plan, by contrast, shows a space from above – as if you are looking down on the room from the ceiling.  Thus, you see the tops of everything, but you cannot view the front, side or back of an object.  An elevation gives you the chance to see everything from the other viewpoints.  Elevations work closely with the floor plans to help develop that graphic view of the building project.
