Sometimes, nothings expresses the unique design of a house like the roof.  The colliding geometry and angled planes that seem to add true distinctionto the character of a house.

 Of course, the roof is for protection and many things are considered when it is designed on a blueprint.   It provides the base to which the roofing materials are attached and ultimately ties all the exterior walls together.
